The Australian Body Art Carnivale is centred around body art in its many varied forms - from the more readily seen art form of face painting right through to cutting-edge full body painting using airbrush and sponge and brush, as well as special effects.
The theme for this year's body art (including face painting) is "The Natural World" - and artists will be judged on their interpretation of that theme. Judges will also be looking for creative edge, originality, use of colour, and technical expertise.
The face painting competition will take place on Saturday 20 September, and the full body art competitions in the three categories of airbrush, sponge and brush, and special effects will take place the next day, Sunday 21 September. A highlight of the weekend will be the final parade and awards presentation commencing at 6.00pm on the Sunday.
Entrants in the face painting competition must work independently (without an assistant), while entrants in the full body art competition categories can either create their design independently, or team up with an assistant artist to create their body art masterpiece.
A panel of judges will announce the winners, with prizes as follows:
Face painting - award and $250 prize money
Airbrush body art - award and $500 prize money
Sponge and brush body art - award and $500 prize money
Special effects body art - award and $500 prize money
People's choice award (as voted by members of the public)
A series of workshops just prior to the Australian Body Art Carnivale will help shape the skills of emerging artists and finetune the skills of experienced body artists.
